Handmade in the countryside of El Salvador in Central America
The hammocks and chairs are made by the people in rural El Salvador. Thanks to the export of these traditional items, people can build a livelihood in their own village and do not have to move to the city in search of work. Their own culture and identity are thus safeguarded.
The first step in the production process is dyeing the cotton in bright, cheerful colours. Bales of pure cotton are dipped in large paint kettles and then left to dry in the sun in the middle of the village. Then the cotton is wound on small bobbins. The hanging chairs are traditionally woven on a hand loom and then finished with wickerwork. The hanging chair is then fitted with a spreader bar and 'suspension cords'. These cords ensure an even distribution of the weight, making it very comfortable to sit in the chair.
